Kotlin was originally meant as an alternative to Java and is fully compatible with it. The 1.0 version was released in 2016, and no more than three years later, Google announced that Kotlin is the preferred language for Android. The language was created by JetBrains, that started working on Kotlin in 2010, and the project was made open-source shortly after in 2012.
